Football Analytics Bi-Weekly Round-up Jan 23-Feb 5

A lot happens in football analytics that doesn’t fit into our normal articles, but is worth knowing about anyway. The many incredible analysts who put their work up online should be noticed, and we’d like to point out a few pieces you may have missed on a bi-weekly (the one that happens once every two weeks, not twice a week) basis.

A Messi Scouting Report

The Coaches’ Voice regularly puts out scouting reports, showing concrete numbers behind how players function. This time they picked possibly the most famous player in the world. Lionel Messi’s scouting report could have easily just read “It’s Lionel Messi”, but it is actually an in-depth look at how his style works in PSG, a club that already has a few superstar players and could have risked the whole becoming much worse than the sum of its parts.

What makes Jurgen Klopp special?

Tifo Football has another video, this time about Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool and formerly a Bundesliga player. It’s a fascinating story, showing how his unique understanding of the game let him take a losing team and turn them into champions.

Gary Al-Smith takes a look at Egypt’s success

AFCON is on these days, and Egypt has been doing very well for itself. While they are buoyed by some incredible talent like Mo Salah, Al-Smith examines Carlos Queiroz, the Egyptian team’s coach, and how his skill has influenced their play. The key, according Al-Smith, is their mentality, but there is also serious tactical analysis.

Dave Nugent discusses tech and micro-betting

Microbetting, a level of gambling where you bet not on the match results, but on specific plays that should happen soon and do not necessarily change the outcome of the game, is now the biggest part of sports gambling. Dave Nugent, CEO of Next League, explains what it currently looks like, and what the challenges ahead of it are.
